Bangkok - Oriental City
Whenever Bangkok is mentioned as a Holiday Destination - people tend to shy away from the idea - thinking that it would be very expensive. Nothing could be further from the truth since Bangkok is one of the cheapest destinations on the planet.

Bangkok by day
Khao San Road
While in Bangkok - I would recommend that you - stroll around the streets and stop by at any one of the thousands of food stalls you can find on every street corner. Most Thais start the day with a simple rice soup called khauw tom (but you can also have a European/American breakfast in any hotel or tourist area of Bangkok).
Another short excursion would be to the world famous Khao San Road. You can find Khao San Road within walking distance of the Chao Praya river and China Town. Here you can find everything that an independent traveler might need.
Khao San Road is also a good shopping area where you can find all sorts of clothing and jewellery. You can also buy tickets for traditional Thai boxing events or book a canal tour if you want.
Having checked out Khao San Road, it is now time to go to one of the most beautiful Asian temples in the world - Wat Phra Kaew. This is the home of the Emerald Buddha and the Royal Palace. You can hire a guide or simply stroll around yourself on the 940.000 sq.m. compound. Do keep in mind that visitors should dress in a respectful manner. Many people have had to miss out on this outstanding landmark - simply because they were wearing short trousers, sleeveless shirts or slippers (flip flops). The palace guards are very strict when it comes to dress codes. Do not forget to remove your shoes before entering the inner temple halls.
Feeling a little tired? No problem. What you should have at this point is a traditional Thai massage. Just behind the Royal Palace you will find the oldest and largest temple - Wat Pho. Wat Pho not only hosts the largest reclining Buddha statue - but it's also the most famous center in Thailand for traditional Thai Medicine. At the eastern end of the compound you will find the Traditional Thai Massage school where you can get a Thai massage from 30 minutes to 2 hours. You should have at least 1 hour. By the way, you can also study Thai Massage here!
Having had your massage - head for the nearest pier at the Chao Phraya river. The pier is hidden away at the eastern end of Wat Pho. From there - you can travel by boat to another beautiful temple. Ask for the boat to Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn). This Khmer style temple is actually located on the other side of the river, but small ferries cross the river every few minutes.
If you want to move on - it is only a short walk to the beginning of Silom Rd. You can walk slowly up the street and check out the shops and stalls, but I suggest it is now time to try out a Tuk Tuk - one of the three-wheeled loony vehicles. Do not forget to negotiate a price and do not listen to any Bull! Tell the driver where you want to go - if he says "it close today" take another Tuk Tuk - he is trying it on!. It should not cost more than 80 Baht to go to Patpong - the old Red Light District of Bangkok - at the other end of Silom Road.
Despite Silom Roads' doubtful reputation - it is an area stuffed with good restaurants (check out O'Riellys Irish Bar next to Sala Daeng BTS Station).
At seven P.M. - In Patpong - the night market will have been built (they build and dismantle it every day) and you can buy imitation designer clothes or watches and many other imitations.
Please Note: We do not recommend Patpong for shopping - it is a tourist trap! It is, however, worth checking out but you can buy elsewhere at a fraction of the cost. We will be happy to advise you.
